Is Your Family Up To the Challenge?
Is your family ready for a ‘transportation challenge’? Do you know one that might be? Point2Point Solutions is looking for a family to join the Eugene Drive Less Family Challenge this May put on by Oregon’s Drive Less Save More Campaign and local Eugene partners. They’re looking for a total of three families to compete against themselves for a single week in cutting back on their driving. Experts will work with the family in putting together a customized plan that outlines step-by-step ways to cut down on road miles, plus give personal consultations. These could include getting expert advice on home organizing, bike commuting and/or tapping into local transit. They will also give each family “Drive Less Kits” that include handy organizers and custom meal planning/shopping list pads, biking and walking gear, transit tickets and gift certificates for home delivery services.
How the challenge works is simple…one week prior (for a total of seven days) a baseline of your weekly driving will be determined—participating families will record the starting mileage on all their vehicles and then report in the ending mileage at which time we’ll determine if there were any unusual trips taken and then assess how to factor in that mileage into the baseline. The challenge will then kick-off and run for a total of seven days (tentatively May 2nd through May 8th). Experts will be on-hand to assist families in carrying out their drive less plans. Each family will be asked to post about their experiences on the Point2Point Solutions’ Facebook page and we expect our media partner KEZI NewsChannel 9 will want to do interviews with participants as well.
At the end of the challenge, we will determine how many miles you were able to shave off of your baseline. The family who reduces the most miles will win the grand prize! We’re working to put together a grand prize family vacation package to Portland on Amtrak that will include a stay at a downtown hotel, plus dinner and tickets to top notch family friendly venues such as the Oregon Zoo and OMSI. the winning family can have their pick between a Burley commuter or kid bike trailer.
Drive Less Save More has held similar family challenges in Portland, and it’s exciting to see this opportunity in Eugene. It lines up great with the Walk + Bike Challenge Month that local schools are participating in and the chance to win a trip to Portland, a cool bike trailer, be on the news AND get all the great commuting resources and assistance is a great opportunity for local families.
