Walk-Bike-Header2015-011

The Walk+Bike Challenge is the entire month of May and registration is now open!

The Walk+Bike Challenge is a friendly competition aimed at encouraging more children and families to walk and bike to and from school and throughout their neighborhoods.

Participation in the Walk+Bike Challenge is easy and fun!

  1. Register your school

  2. Download the Coordinator Packet (PDF) for awesome tips, ideas, and resources

  3. Return to the website during the month of May to track your school’s walking and biking trips!

You’ll have support from the statewide program AND from me, your local Safe Routes to School Coordinator. You decide how much you want to do; hold a kick-off event, highlight National Bike to School Day on May 6th, do the whole month challenge or just a week or two of it. The important part is to register and participate in some way.

Order FREE Incentives & Apply for a Stipend!

Free incentives – Once you register your school you will also be able to order fun and free incentives to encourage participants during the Challenge. You can order a variety of incentives for free OR choose a prepared box with an assortment of incentives (value will equal $40). The first 250 orders will also receive a Walk+Bike helmet to use as an incentive. Once you register, you will receive an email with ordering details.

School Stipends – You can apply locally for a stipend of $200-$400, determined by school size. Funds can be used anyway you’d like to encourage more walking and biking during May. That could be more incentives, prizes, healthy food, or any creative idea to make a great event happen. Email Ellen Currier (ellen.currier@ltd.org), the Regional SRTS Coordinator to ask for a stipend. She’ll send you details and get you set up!

Weekly Prize Drawings!

You can track on a weekly basis or for the whole month. Tracking is simple! You can use the material in the Coordinator Packet or make your own poster or card for keeping track of how many students are walking or rolling to school. Then you use the online Activity Tracker to log participant trips. Why track every week? The BTA will hold weekly prize drawings for schools that log trips each week to win extra incentives, gift certificates, and other great prizes.

You can also join the Facebook event to hear what other parents and teachers are doing and then start planning for a fun Walk+Bike Challenge Month in May.
