The Walk+Roll Challenge Heats Up

Walk+Roll Challenge at Meadow View Elementary School

Thirty-three schools from the Bethel, Eugene 4J and Springfield districts are participating in the Walk+Roll Challenge this May in a wide range of events encouraging walking, biking and rolling to school. Interest in participating the Walk+Roll Challenge has been immense. Below are highlights from just a few of the region’s schools.

On Wednesday, May 10, Eugene Mayor Lucy Vinis joined kids, parents and community leaders at River Road/El Camino del Río Elementary School as they walked, biked and rolled to school. Around 100 students out of a total of 330 participated in the event. A special thanks to Klink Cycles for performing 15 free bike checks and to Peace Health and Safe Kids West for donating more than 80 helmets prior to the event. Also a special thanks to Principal Joel Lavin for his support.

Meadow View Elementary School in the Bethel School District is seeing fantastic participation in their week-long (May 8-12) Walk+Roll Challenge. The Parent Teacher Organization at Meadow View has worked hard to make it a strong event with great signage, outreach to parents and lots of volunteer support. Bus riders have been given opportunities to participate too – a great way to let everyone join in the fun. Eugene Mayor Lucy Vinis showed her support for Walk+Roll Challenge participants by joining Malabon Elementary for their Walk+Roll Challenge festivities.

Springfield’s Agnes Stewart Middle School is encouraging their week-long (May 15-19) Walk+Roll Challenge in some clever ways. A bicycle mechanic will visit on Wednesday, May 17 to help tune up bikes and a bike blender smoothie station will make yummy treats on Friday the 19th. Springfield Public Schools Superintendent Sue Reike-Smith will join students at Agnes Stewart on Friday to help recognize students that participated in the Challenge.

Great events are organized by dedicated volunteers. We’d like to give a special thanks to the individuals coordinating this year’s Walk+Roll Challenge. Thank you:
