Summer; Time to Get Active
Summer is here! School is out, the sun is shining, and the opportunities to get active are abundant!
The Eugene Safe Routes to School program celebrated the beginning of summer with Bike Day on June 13th and the opportunities to stay active will continue all the way through Walk + Bike to School Day on October 7th. You can see all the great activities that are happening by checking out the Events tab of the site but here are some of the highlights:
The Kidical Mass rides this summer will be July 17th and August 21st. The last two rides have been extra special including one ending with a climbing session at the Skinner Columns and the other with a big bar-b-que! What’s in store for the next rides?! Stay tuned for more.
GEARs and SRTS have teamed up to offer some great Traffic Skills 101 bike education courses for parents, teenagers, and the whole community. The next courses are July 24/25 and September 4/5. Information can be found on the GEARs Program page.
Safety Town: The Eugene Police Department in partnership with Eugene Kiwanis Club will be holding a two week comprehensive educational program designed to introduce preschool 5-year-old children to safety awareness. This nationally certified and accredited program emphasizes pedestrian and bicycle safety, while also introducing various other safety issues.
August 10-21st, 9-11:30 each day.

The Blackberry Jamboree and bRamble: The Jamboree is a community fun ride around Eugene made up of two 10 mile loops through the neighborhoods of Eugene with stops planned at community centers and parks along the route. The event isSaturday, August 1, 2009, and starts at 9am at the EWEB Plaza on the River Trail just below the Defazio Bike Bridge. Cost is $5 for an individual or $10 for the whole family. Everyone gets blackberry pie and ice cream after the ride. Fun for the whole family. Food, entertainment and T-shirts will be available. More information on the GEARs website.
The National Safe Routes to School Conference is coming to Portland August 19-21st. The Eugene SRTS Team will have a few presenters and it will be an exciting time to learn about what SRTS programs are doing around the country to get more kids walking and biking to school. Several exciting sessions, mobile workshops, speakers, and events will make this a great event to kick off the school year! More information and registratino at SafeRoutesConference.org
