Winners All Around!
Raffle Winners, a Gold-level recognition, and Kids!
This year our whole community won as 29 local schools and thousands of kids participated in the International Walk + Bike to School Day but we have some other very special winners to announce. We held a raffle for participating parent, teachers, and staff who coordinated or volunteered for their local event.
The winners of the raffle prizes were drawn on Saturday at the GEARs Bike Swap, Ice Cream Social, and Volunteer Thank You gathering and here are the official results (with a special “gold bonus” announcement as well):
MP3 Player: Carrie F. from Camas Ridge Elementary
Detours Backpack (donated by Arriving by Bike): Jaclyn M. from Hamlin Middle School!
Commuter Conversion Kit (donated by Revolution Cycles): Dodie K. from Awbrey Park!
The Xtracycle “Free Radical” (donated byArriving by BikeXtracycle) goes to Shirley Betourney!!! The PE instructor at Monroe Middle School has been an important leader in Safe Routes to School, educating each new BTA bike instructor, holding major encouragement events, working hard to try and get a covered bike parking area at her school, and growing the number of kids walking and biking to Monroe. What a perfect winner for this prize!!
In a surprising announcement just made today, another Zigo Leader will be awarded to a Eugenian again this year! Lisa V. from Howard Elementary won the national drawing for this ‘modular kid-carrier’. She just happens to have a 3 1/2 year old who she is excited to wheel her around in it! We have some good bike juju around here I’d say!
Maybe we can have a little utility bike show-off from these 4J PE Teachers?!
Another special announcement: Today we learned that the League of American Bicyclists has awarded Eugene the Gold-level designation in the Bicycle-Friendly Communities program! We’ll be celebrating with the Mayor and other city officials on Thursday from noon-1pm at the Hilyard Community Center. If you can’t make that event there’s a ‘happy hour’ celebration being held on Friday from 6-7 at Arriving by Bike (2705 Willamette St.). Our increase in SRTS school committees and W+B Day schools was one of the things that helped us get here. Let’s keep at it as we head for Platinum!
Thanks to all the volunteers and organizers who made this the best Walk + Bike to School Day yet!
